So much for the Summer being rubbish for games…
Jul 27th
Usually this time of year I am sat around wondering where all the games are and wishing it was nearing Xmas so that there was something to play, but not this year! More like wishing I had more free time
Feel a bit like a kid at Xmas though at the moment, lots of games to play (as you can see from the growing list on the left of my blog) and also online browsing to see about upgrading my PC which is long overdue as I am getting fed up with fighting with my current PC to run games that come out now.
Mass Effect 2 and Starcraft 2 are both new additions to the list, both of which I am looking forward to getting stuck into, could really do with finishing Red Dead Redemption before hand though… *sigh*
Just hope I can clear this lot before the busy run up to Xmas!
Darksiders, how to make a great game
Jul 23rd
Usually I am not a fan of games copying parts of other games instead of trying to do their own thing, however Darksiders is the exception to this.
Moody, don’t give a damn main character (with all his combat skills also) like God of War – Check! Gameplay of a Zelda game – Check! Portal gun from… well Portal – Check! Various movie/game quotes – Check!
All this adds up to one of the best games I have played for a few years, the 4 horsemen/heaven/hell type setting probably helps as it keeps things interesting but the gameplay keeps the game flowing and with only a few annoyances this game should of probably got more praise than it has.
If you are looking for a hack n slash adventure game (and even if you aren’t) then give Darksiders a go as I cannot rate it highly enough, I am glad to see there is a sequel coming… even if it is due in 2012
Playing ‘War’ has never been so much fun! Bravo Vigil Game, Bravo!
Good games are like buses…

You can never find one, then two turn up at once.
Or in my case, more than two. I know I shouldn’t complain as its Summer now so games are going to dry up like the UK’s water supplies! but I also need to find the time to play all these good games
I am hoping I am near the end of Darksiders, although its an excellent game so in a way I hope I’m not! Super Mario Galaxy 2 is somehow even better than the first in the series and gives my Wii some love at last, luckily this is the sort of game where you can do the odd levels here and there around other things… like the washing up etc..
Still need to get back into Red Dead Redemption, but I now also have Crackdown 2 to play… after I started this up last night I can see my urge to chase after those green orbs returning!
This probably wasn’t the best time for me to try and get back into playing Eve Online then, I will try and juggle them all… somehow… god only knows how
The games have now begun
Jul 5th
You know the problem, you go ages without much to play and then you get too much to play!
Red Dead Redemption was keeping me pretty busy until Lovefilm sent me Darksiders… this was a title I didn’t know much about but had seen some good feedback on. I started playing it and now can’t stop, it’s a really well made title. Sort of a mix of God of War and a Zelda game, and it works really well…so much so I think its going to keep me off Red Dead until I have finished it.
Eve Online is also making a come back, or at least I am going to try and fit playing it into my schedule… not sure if it’s going to work but I hope so. Problem is Crackdown 2 is out this week…
Never just rains, it pours!
Jun 22nd
As you can see from my previous post I was caught up in the whole E3 hype… that was until I got a call from the hospital asking me if I wanted to take advantage of a cancellation to get my dental op sorted… This then turned into having 3 teeth out and then a wisdom tooth out, which then got infected which meant a whole lot of pain for most of last week and the weekend just gone.
Doesn’t look like I missed much though, the best thing to come out of E3 would appear to be the new 3DS from Nintendo… 3D gaming on a handheld without the need for silly glasses? well done the Big N!
Been in too much pain to do much gaming, however I do now have Red Dead Redemption and Darksiders to play. Both of which look to be excellent games from brief plays of each so I am looking forward to getting stuck into each of them.
Played the demo of Crackdown 2 last night, was about as fun as the first game, maybe more so its a must buy for me in July when it comes out.
This week I am also excited as the new iPhone is launched, time for me to upgrade my now ageing 3G model for the new iPhone 4, although I have a feeling the stores will be packed with people trying to get their hands on them. I will brave the masses on Thursday!
It’s that time of year again, E3!

E3, the show that lets my inner (ok not so inner) geek grin like stupid mad thing.
E3 kicked off yesterday, it was Microsoft’s conference and they announced a few things Natal is now Kinect, a new Xbox 360 console that is quieter, smaller and has built in WiFi, and some new game footage. A few other people also had things to announce/show. Below are videos to things that interest me from Day 1 of E3.
Gears of War 3 footage
Bulletstorm footage
Crysis 2 footage

Mass Effect – Only took 2 years!
May 26th
Way back in 2008 I rented Mass Effect, played it for about 2 hours and sent it back as I thought it could take me a while to playthrough… 2 years on I went back to it and was a little surprised to find I finished it in about 13 hours.
I have mixed views on this game, I love the settings and the type of game but the actual game itself has all sorts of niggles on the 360. Glitchy cover system, no decent auto save system and texture pop in throughout slightly ruined what was a decent overall game. Being a few years old now I can sort of forgive these issues, hopefully Mass Effect 2 is a better all round package.
The first 4 hours of this game I struggled with, I would die in every major encounter however once I had figured out the upgrade system and found some better equipment it became far more enjoyable and I was able to sit back and playthrough the story opening up around me.
Hmm it sounds like I am being a bit hard on the game, this shouldn’t be the case as I enjoyed it alot. I am very interested in seeing how it has evolved in Mass Effect 2.
Moving next week, so game time will be even more limited. However I do have the God of War Collection ready to keep me busy while I am internetless… Problem is Red Dead Redemption is calling me from afar…
Didn’t think they made hard games anymore?
May 17th
Or at least I didn’t think they did.
After 2 years I have finally gone back to playing Mass Effect on the 360 so that I can finish it and try out the sequel. Maybe I am just rubbish at it but I seem to die like all the time?! Oh well, I will stick at it as I do like the game. Much swearing will be happening that’s for sure!
I picked up the God of War collection for the PS3 at the weekend, the re-release of the PS2 classics God of War 1 and 2 for the PS3 is a must play for me before I move onto God of War 3 as I have never played them. However I will probably leave these until I move house and am without Internet for a few weeks.
2 weeks until moving week commences….. I should really start packing!
Bioshock 2, you know what they say about sequels…
May 10th
… they are never as good as the originals…
Well in most cases anyway, but Bioshock 2 sadly fits into this category. Now I loved the first game, I thought it had great atmosphere and a great little story with a good twist. I was worried that a second game wouldn’t be able to recreate the same package and it seems like I was correct.
First off you are now a Big Daddy, sounds cool right? Well it should be except you feel about as strong as a wet paper bag… I got around this by pretending I was a frail human being again, which worked for the most part until the story kept reminding me I was a Big Daddy.. Grrr.
I played the first Bioshock on the PC, so maybe the atmosphere was better through headphones but the 360 version seemed to lack any really… but again this could be a failing of using a TV’s speakers. I am sure the areas in the second game are smaller though but I could just be imagining it to find more problems… so onto the things I actually liked…
ermmm…
See this is the problem, I love the setting and I like the actual gameplay but a game like this lives on its story and atmosphere and the sequel just didn’t delivery this for me so it was a bit of a struggle to want to playthrough and finish. Maybe I will pick it up when it is mega cheap on PC on Steam one day and try again on PC, who knows.
Don’t get me wrong Bioshock 2 is an ‘OK’ game, just not as good as the first one in my opinion. Onto the next game I go…
